Power inverters are a great way to keep your electrical equipment running while on the move, but it is important to take a little care when using an inverter to make sure you dont end up in strife. Here are five top tips to keep both your inverter and electrical devices you are powering running smoothly.
1) Always follow the manufactures guidelines - Seems simple enough but a lot of people seem to think they know better and end up not only damaging their inverter but also voiding their warranty due to misuse.
2) Dont try and power something that needs more power than the inverter is rated at. It might be tempting to try and run that high powered device but at best your inverter will just shut down but depending on the quality of your power inverter it might end up being damaged. It is important to always have a bit of head room with your power inverter as some appliances use more power than they state they do.
3) Dont power anything more than 150W from your cigarette lighter. It is convenient but it is not designed for high power draws so if you are going to be running more than a single device it is far safer for both your inverter and car electrical system to connect the inverter directly to your battery terminals.
4) Pay attention to which terminals you connect the inverter to or you will end up going through a lot of fuses. You want to make sure you connect the correct leads to the positive and negative terminals of the battery to avoid the inverters internal safety system kicking and blowing a fuse.
5) Which brings us to our last handy tip - Always make sure you have a few fuses with you in case for whatever reason you blow a fuse or two. There is not much point having a power inverter with you if you cant use it because dont have any fuses!!
Following the above tips will go a long way to ensure you get the most out of any power inverters you use with minimal problems along the way.
